Nigerian On-air personality Do2dtun slams South African singer Tyla over her acceptance speech at the VMA awards.
South African superstar Tyla has won her first MTV Video Music Award beating Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, Tems, Tyla, and Usher in the Best Afrobeat award category.
However during her acceptance speech while she expressed her gratitude for the win she used it as an opportunity to educate the masses on the clear difference between afrobeat and amapiano. She expressed that while she was happy it was bittersweet as she is an amapiano artist and not an afrobeat artist.
“The global impact that ‘Water’ has had on the world just proves that African music can be pop music too. This is so special but bittersweet because I know there is a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats,” said Tyla.
“Even though Afrobeats has run things and has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It is more than just Afrobeats.”
“I come from South Africa. I represent Amapiano. I represent my culture,” Tyla continued.
OAP Do2dtun came on social media and blasted the South African “Water” crooner saying she would have dropped the award or denounced the nominations if it didn’t represent her or her sound.
He wrote on an X post, “Aunty @tyla aka am not Afrobeats, I am Amapiano. We have heard you but your song “Water” is not amapiano either. If you thought you were categorized in a wrong category, you should have given the award back or denounced the nomination.
“You clearly took an award that didn’t represent you or your sound from that statement you made.”
