Nigerian singer-songwriter, activist and TV show host Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy aka Areafada, has come out to clear the air on his relationship with late Tyna Onwudiwe.
Charly Boy in an interview revealed that he was close to marrying the renowned artist however he did not see himself marrying two wives and when they had a discussion about it they settled they were better of as friends.
He also addressed long-standing rumors flying around that he was the father of some of Onwudiwe’s children.
He said, “I almost married Tyna (Onwudiwe).One day, we sat down and talked about it. I said, oh, no, I don’t see myself marrying two wives,” he recalled.
“And by the way, if we get married, we will kill ourselves. Let’s be good friends. And we became the best of all friends. Tyna was such a beautiful soul. She would give her last penny to a stranger. That was who she always was.
“People used to tease me by calling her my wife. They said your wife has cancer. I wanted somebody, a female, to help me with that. Because if I was doing it on my own, people would say, of course, is she not your girlfriend? Is she not your wife?
“In fact, some of her kids, people think they’re my kids.”
Charly Boy spoke about how he sought financial support for the late singer during her tumultuous fight against cancer in South Africa, but sadly, the illness took her life.
Tyna Onwudiwe passed away on the 29th of June, 2001, only 17 days after celebrating her 47th birthday.
Onwudiwe was a style icon, starring in various in Nollywood movies. She was known for her benevolence and support for other artists.
She notably opened the door for Charly Boy’s music career when it refused to take off. Her music continues to inspire and influence many generations of artists and audiences.
