The Edo State gubernatorial election has three major candidates in a competitive race for the Governor seat striving to secure enough votes to emerge victorious.
The INEC has 17 candidates being listed for the election but Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, and Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress, APC, being at the fore front.
The much anticipated 2024 governorship election is finally here with over 2,629,025 registered voters in Edo state and the people are ready to decide who would lead them for the next 4 years.
The candidates are locked in a fierce battle for the governorship seat and each of the is armed with a “vision for a path to prosperity” for the state.
As the three top candidates go head to head to in this election, the people of Edo state stand at a crossroads, poised to decide between the promise of innovative governance, the weight of political experience, and giving in for a third force.
This gubernatorial race is similar to the 2020 governorship election. However, the presence of the Labour Party as a third option has changed the direction of the elections as there is no certainty on how it will turn out.
Labour party’s involvement in the election has divided the Obidient movement, particularly those from Edo Central who believe power should be zoned to their district for equity as their candidate is from Edo South.
“The three major parties are aware of Edo State’s political inclination. The APC gave their ticket to Edo Central, and the PDP did the same, so why didn’t the LP follow suit?
“There are good men in the LP from Edo Central who worked for Peter Obi during the last election,” FS Yusuf, a prominent Peter Obi supporter, posted on his X handle as he declared support for Mr Ighodalo, the PDP candidate.
