Labour party’s gubernatorial candidate for the Edo state elections Olumide Akpata has come out to state boldly that he answers to no god father and is only answerable to the Edo people.
A little background on Olumide Akpata; He is a prominent corporate lawyer and former NBA President and is running for governor of Edo state on the platform of the Labour Party.
He is the 30th President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the largest bar association in Africa.
Prior to his election as president, he served as a pioneer member of the NBA Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) and worked with the founding Chairman, to operationalize the section after its inauguration in 2004.
He has also been the Secretary, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the NBA-SBL in 2013, 2014 and 2016 respectively.
This was said in an interview on Channels TV Thursday Edition of Politics today where he appeared as a guest.
Olumide Akpata stated clearly Governor Obaseki though being his kinsman, he can not be a Plan B for his government, which the Edo people have complained of their abysmal and poor performance.
The former NBA president denied the speculation that he is being funded by Governor Obaseki ahead of the election in September.
The LP gubernatorial candidate also cleared the air on his campaign funding. Akpata said he is funding himself and he has good friends who believed in him, adding that “your network is your network”.
According to Akpata, “Initial, I was said to be the agent of Governor Obaseki, we were able to debunk that.
Today, I was said to be sponsored by the APC. I think it is conspiracy theorising that is most stupid”.
“I am funding myself and I have friends who believe in me and that we can do much better in Edo,” he said. “I have no strings attached. I am not answerable to any godfather. I am not answerable to any political benefactor”.
“That is one reason they (Edo people) can trust the Labour Party government because we are answerable to the people,” Akpata added.
The forthcoming Edo state gubernatorial election has some strong top contenders which include Olumide Akpata of Labour Party, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party and Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
We wish all of them the best and hope for peaceful and fair election.
